Why choose a bilingual education?

The French school system explained
In the French system of education, school is divided into the following age groups. Within these groups, the curriculum is divided into cycles with defined learning outcomes. In line with the French system, at the end of middle school (collège) all pupils take the brevet de collèges exam. At the end of high school, pupils take exams to achieve the baccalaureate which enables them to go on to further study at university, grandes écoles or vocational school.
The Socle Commun
In the French curriculum, compulsory schooling must guarantee that every pupil has the necessary means to acquire a common base of knowledge, skills and culture. This is known as the common base of knowledge, or socle commun.
This common foundation must :
- Enable pupils to pursue their studies and build a personal and professional future
- Prepare pupils to be engaged citizens
The Common Base of Knowledge, Skills and Culture is acquired over three cycles of education:
- Cycle 2, the basic learning cycle: CP, CE1 and CE2
- Cycle 3, the consolidation cycle: CM1, CM2 and class 6e
- Cycle 4, the in-depth learning cycle: classes 5, 4 and 3
